About Canopy Crossings
Canopy Crossings is an independent explainer site about how tree-dwelling animals get across Australian roads, and how people on bush blocks can keep chickens without harming the wildlife next door. It is written by an editorial team for curious readers: drivers, landholders, council staff, students and anyone who has spotted a rope across a highway and wondered what it was for.
What we cover
We look at the engineering and at the evidence. Rope bridges, glider poles and the cameras that monitor them make up one half of the site. The other half is the bush block, where quolls, goannas and foxes meet the chook pen.
We try to say what is known and how it is known. If a study found that a structure went unused, or that nobody has tested a claim, we say so.
How we check facts
Every figure in an article is linked to a source, and we open and read each source before using it. We prefer government pages, peer-reviewed papers and local media. If we cannot verify a number, we leave it out. Where two sources disagree, we use the original study.
Legal points are general information, not legal advice. Rules differ between states and change over time, so check with the relevant agency before you act.
Diagrams
The diagrams are drawn by the editorial team and are schematic, not engineering plans.
Corrections
If you find a mistake, please tell us through the contact page. We fix errors when we can verify them.
